Tesla Powerwall 2 & Powerwall 3 Warranty Audit: Proving <70% Capacity Retention for a Free Swap
How to audit your Tesla Powerwall’s real usable kWh capacity before your 10-year warranty expires, extract lifetime cycle throughput via the local Gateway API or Netzero app, and trigger a free 13.5kWh warranty replacement if usable capacity falls below 9.45 kWh (70%).
1. Factory Diagnostic & Direct RMA Submission Protocol
Step 1 — Check Whether Your Powerwall Meets the "Unlimited Cycles" Warranty Condition: Under the Tesla Powerwall Limited Warranty, as long as your Powerwall is used solely for Solar Self-Consumption, Time-Based Control (TOU peak shaving), Backup Reserve, or an approved utility Virtual Power Plant (VPP), it enjoys UNLIMITED CYCLES for 10 full years with a guaranteed minimum retention of 70% of 13.5 kWh (= 9.45 kWh usable capacity).
Step 2 — Run a Full 100%-to-5% Calibration Discharge Test & Export CSV Telemetry: In the Tesla App, set your Backup Reserve to 100% until the Powerwall is completely full and idle for 2 hours. Then after sunset, switch your mode to Self-Powered (with 0%–5% reserve) and run a steady 2kW–3kW home load until the Powerwall hits 5%. Download the 5-minute CSV data from the Tesla App (Settings -> Download My Data): if a 95% discharge delivered less than 8.98 kWh AC, your total usable capacity has dropped below 9.45 kWh!
Step 3 — Query Exact BMS "nominal_full_pack_energy" Using the Netzero for Powerwall App or Local Gateway API: Advanced homeowners can connect to the free third-party Netzero app or query their Tesla Backup Gateway’s local JSON endpoint (/api/system_status) to read the exact internal BMS register "nominal_full_pack_energy." A brand-new Powerwall reads ~13,500–14,000 Wh; any reading below 9,450 Wh is mathematical proof of a warranty breach.
Step 4 — Open an In-App Capacity Audit Ticket Before Your 10-Year Installation Anniversary: In the Tesla App, go to Support -> Health Check / Service -> Battery Capacity & Runtime. Request an official "Remote Tesla Energy Capacity Retention Test." Tesla engineers will remotely command a calibrated charge/discharge cycle and, if capacity is <70%, schedule a free warranty replacement unit.

Tesla, Inc. (Energy Products Division) Warranty & RMA FAQ
Why do earlier Powerwall 2 units (2017–2021 NMC chemistry) degrade faster than the new Powerwall 3 (LFP chemistry)?
Tesla Powerwall 2 used Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) 21700 cylindrical cells, which naturally experience 2%–3% annual degradation when cycled daily in hot garages or kept at 100% Backup Reserve in 100°F+ climates. If you own a 2017–2019 Powerwall 2 in Arizona, Texas, Florida, or California, definitely audit your usable kWh before your 10-year anniversary! Newer Powerwall 3 units use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cells with 2x–3x longer cycle life.
Does Tesla still require the Powerwall to be connected to Wi-Fi to keep the full 10-year warranty?
Yes! Look carefully at the Tesla Powerwall Limited Warranty: if a Powerwall is disconnected from the internet for an extended period so Tesla cannot push safety firmware updates, Tesla reserves the right to reduce the warranty from 10 years to 4 years. Always keep your Backup Gateway connected to your home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet!
If Tesla replaces my Powerwall 2 under warranty in Year 8, is the replacement battery brand new or refurbished?
Under standard industry warranty terms, Tesla may install either a new or factory-remanufactured Powerwall 2 assembly that is certified to have >70% (typically 85%–95%+) usable energy capacity for the remainder of your original 10-year warranty period.
