Off-Grid Solar Grounding, Earth Ground Rods & Neutral-Ground Bonding (NEC 250 & 690.47)
No topic in off-grid solar causes more dangerous confusion than Grounding and Neutral-Ground Bonding. If you leave an off-grid cabin "floating" without a Neutral-Ground bond, your GFCI outlets won't work and metal appliance chassis can float at 60V AC. If you double-bond Neutral and Ground, you energize the bare ground wires!
📐 Step-by-Step Off-Grid Engineering & Sizing Rules
Rule #1 — Exactly ONE Neutral-Ground Bond at Any Time: In an off-grid system, AC Neutral (White) and Equipment Ground (Green/Bare) must be bonded together at ONE single point (either inside your Main AC Load Panel OR automatically inside the inverter via its internal Dynamic N-G Relay when islanded). Never bond in both places!
Rule #2 — Why We Drive Two 8-Foot Earth Ground Rods: Earth ground rods do NOT clear 120V AC circuit breaker faults (the Neutral-Ground bond does that). Earth ground rods exist for ONE reason: to bleed atmospheric static electricity and nearby lightning surges safely into the soil!
Rule #3 — NEVER Drive an Unbonded Separate Ground Rod for a Ground-Mount Solar Array: If your solar panels are mounted 100 feet from the cabin and you drive a ground rod at the panels, you MUST bond that rod back to the cabin's main ground rod with a continuous #6 AWG copper wire in the trench. Unbonded separate ground rods force lightning current straight through your inverter MPPT board!
Negative Battery Bus Grounding: On modern transformerless hybrid inverters (EG4 18kPV, 6000XP, Sol-Ark), the 48V Battery Negative (-) and PV Negative (-) are electronically isolated and must NEVER be bolted directly to earth ground (only the metal battery rack/case is grounded).
⚡ Conductor Sizing, Fusing & Conduit Schedule
Open Full Single-Line Wiring Schematics →- Grounding Electrode System (NEC 250.52): Drive two 5/8" × 8-foot copper-clad steel ground rods spaced at least 6 feet apart (16 feet ideal), connected with continuous #6 AWG bare solid copper wire to the Main Cabin Panel Ground Bar.
- Racking & Chassis Bonding: Bond all solar panel frames, aluminum rails, inverter chassis, and metal battery cabinets together with #6 AWG or #8 AWG copper equipment grounding conductor.

Frequently Asked Questions: Off-Grid Grounding & Neutral-Ground Bond
How do I check if my off-grid cabin has a proper Neutral-Ground bond?
Plug a $10 three-prong outlet tester into any 120V cabin outlet, or use a multimeter on AC Volts: L1-to-Neutral must read 120V, L1-to-Ground must read 120V, and Neutral-to-Ground must read 0.0V to 0.5V. If L1-to-Ground and Neutral-to-Ground both read ~60V AC, you have an unbonded "floating neutral"!
