Generator Neutral-to-Ground Bonding for Solar Batteries: Floating vs. Bonded Neutral

Why connecting a "Bonded Neutral" portable generator to a house panel or hybrid inverter trips the generator’s GFCI breaker immediately—and how NEC 250.30 governs Floating vs. Bonded Neutral generators.

2-Pole (Solid Neutral) vs. 3-Pole (Switched Neutral) Transfer Switching

1. 3-Way Triad Electrical Engineering & Protection Rules

STEP 1

The Golden Rule of NEC Article 250 (One Single Neutral-to-Ground Bond at a Time!): In any AC electrical system, Neutral and Ground must be connected together at ONE—and ONLY ONE—point (almost always your Service Entrance Disconnect / Main Panel).

STEP 2

Why 99% of Residential Transfer Switches & Hybrid Inverters Are "Solid Neutral" (2-Pole): Standard residential transfer switches and hybrid inverters (EG4 18kPV, Sol-Ark 15K, Victron) switch only the two hot legs (L1 and L2) while keeping the Neutral wire solidly connected to your main service panel’s Neutral-Ground bond. Under NEC 250.30, this means your generator is NOT a "separately derived system"!

STEP 3

Why You Must Use a FLOATING NEUTRAL Generator on a Solid-Neutral Inverter: Because your house panel ALREADY bonds Neutral to Ground, if your portable generator ALSO has a Neutral-to-Frame bond inside the generator, neutral current splits in half and flows down the green equipment ground wire in your generator cord! The generator’s onboard 20mA GFCI sensor sees this missing neutral current and trips the breaker in 0.1 seconds!

===================================================================
1. Connected to House Panel / Hybrid Inverter GEN Port (Solid Neutral):
└──► Generator MUST Have a FLOATING NEUTRAL (Unbond Frame Jumper!)
(Because Neutral-Ground Bond already exists at Main Service Entrance)

2. Standalone Jobsite Use (Extension Cords Plugged Directly into Gen):
└──► Generator Uses BONDED NEUTRAL (Or plug in a $12 Bonding Plug)

Generator & Hybrid Inverter Integration FAQ

How do I test with a multimeter if my generator has a Floating Neutral or Bonded Neutral?

With the generator turned OFF and unplugged, set your digital multimeter to Continuity/Ohms (Ω) and touch one probe to the Neutral slot of the 120V/240V outlet and the other probe to the Ground pin (or metal frame). 0.0 Ω (beep) = Bonded Neutral; OL (Open Loop / Infinite) = Floating Neutral!

Do permanent Generac, Kohler, and Cummins home standby generators come with a Floating Neutral from the factory?

Yes! Permanent home standby generators (Generac Guardian, Kohler RCA, Cummins QuietConnect) are shipped from the factory with a Floating Neutral specifically because they are designed to wire into a 2-pole residential transfer switch.
