1. 3-Way Triad Electrical Engineering & Protection Rules

STEP 1

The 20% Natural Gas & 10% Propane BTU Derating Reality: Because Natural Gas (methane) has lower energy density than vaporized gasoline, a "12,000W Running / 15,000W Peak" Tri-Fuel portable generator produces 12,000W on Gasoline, ~10,800W on Liquid Propane (-10%), and ~9,500W on Natural Gas (-20%)! You MUST program your hybrid inverter’s Maximum Generator Input KW to match your weakest fuel (e.g., 7.0 kW continuous on Natural Gas) so the engine never stalls.

STEP 2

Open-Frame Brush Alternator (18% THD) vs. Closed-Frame Inverter Generator (<3% THD): Standard $1,100 open-frame Tri-Fuel generators produce 15%–22% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). Most UL1741 hybrid inverters will refuse to sync their AC relay to >10% THD! Either buy a Tri-Fuel INVERTER Generator (<3% THD) OR wire your open-frame Tri-Fuel generator into a 48V 100A DC Rectifier (EG4 Chargeverter) which converts dirty AC straight into clean 54V DC for your battery!

STEP 3

Floating Neutral Requirement on Portable Generators: When plugging a portable generator into a hybrid inverter’s GEN port (or a house panel where Neutral and Ground are already bonded), you MUST unbond the generator’s onboard neutral-to-frame jumper so you don’t create a parallel neutral-ground loop that trips the generator’s GFCI breaker!

Generator & Hybrid Inverter Integration FAQ

Why does a 20-lb BBQ propane tank freeze up and stop flowing in winter on a 10,000W generator?

Liquid propane boils into vapor inside the tank, absorbing massive heat (" evaporative cooling"). At 20°F, a small 20-lb tank frosts over externally and internal pressure drops below 10 PSI within 45 minutes. For winter generators over 6,000W, always use a 100-lb LP cylinder (or two manifolded 40-lb tanks) or piped Natural Gas!

How do I unbond the neutral on a Westinghouse or DuroMax Tri-Fuel generator?

Remove the circular end-bell cover on the alternator housing (or behind the control panel), locate the white/green jumper wire connecting the Neutral terminal stud to the grounded steel frame bolt, remove the jumper, tape/insulate it, and label the front of the generator "FLOATING NEUTRAL — FOR TRANSFER SWITCH USE."
