Direct 48V DC Generator Charging (EG4 Chargeverter): The Ultimate Off-Grid Hack

Why top off-grid engineers no longer wire portable generators into their hybrid inverter’s AC GEN port: using a dedicated 48V 100A DC Rectifier (EG4 Chargeverter) completely isolates your home from dirty generator AC while charging LiFePO4 batteries at 5,120W.

Compatible Inverters
All 48V (51.2V) LiFePO4 Battery Banks (EG4, Victron, Sol-Ark, MidNite)
THD & Power Quality
Accepts Up to 30% THD & 45Hz–66Hz Dirty AC Without Tripping!
Auto-Start Control
Built-In Dry-Contact Relay Controlled by Closed-Loop BMS SoC % or Voltage

1. 3-Way Triad Electrical Engineering & Protection Rules

STEP 1

The Problem with AC Pass-Through on Portable Generators: When you wire a portable generator into a hybrid inverter’s AC GEN port, the inverter must synchronize its internal sine wave to the generator’s shaky 57Hz–62Hz frequency and pass that dirty, high-THD generator power straight through to your expensive refrigerators, mini-splits, and LED lights (causing flickering lights and humming motors!).

STEP 2

How "Double-Conversion" Direct 48V DC Charging Solves Everything: Instead of connecting the generator to the AC side of the inverter, connect the generator to an EG4 Chargeverter-GC (a 240V AC to 48V–57V DC 100-Amp industrial switch-mode rectifier) wired directly to your 48V LiFePO4 battery busbar!

STEP 3

Zero Flicker, Zero Inverter Trips, 100% Pure Sine Wave to Your House: Your hybrid inverter stays in pure off-grid Battery Inverter Mode 100% of the time—supplying crystal-clean <1.5% THD 60.00Hz power to your house—while the Chargeverter silently pumps up to 5,120W (100A at 51.2V) of DC power from the generator into the battery bank!

Generator & Hybrid Inverter Integration FAQ

Can the EG4 Chargeverter run on a small 120V 2,000W Honda EU2200i suitcase generator?

Yes! The EG4 Chargeverter accepts both 240V AC and 120V AC (90V–260V universal input). On a small 120V Honda EU2200i, simply dial the Chargeverter current limit down to 28 Amps DC (~1,500W) on the LCD screen!

Can I still use solar panels at the exact same time the Chargeverter is running?

Yes! Because both your solar MPPTs and the Chargeverter feed the common 48V DC battery busbar with voltage-regulated CC/CV charging, solar and generator DC charging combine seamlessly.
