NEC 690.12 Solar Rapid Shutdown Wiring Diagram (Tigo TS4-A-F vs APsmart vs Enphase)
Every US city electrical inspector tests Rapid Shutdown (NEC 690.12) before granting final sign-off. Learn how SunSpec PLC transmitters, ferrite toroid cores, and Tigo TS4-A-F module-level switches drop 500V DC strings down to a safe 0.6V per panel in 30 seconds.

NEC 2023 Code Compliance & Electrician Commissioning Checklist
⚖️ NEC 2023 CODE📜 Mandatory NEC Code Compliance Notes (NEC 2020 / 2023 Section 690.12(A)-(D) & UL 1741 PVRSS)Pass your municipal AHJ rough and final electrical inspection on the first visit.
- ⚡NEC 690.12(B)(1) & (2) Voltage Limits: Within 30 seconds of hitting the exterior Rapid Shutdown switch (or losing utility grid power on grid-only systems), conductors outside the 1-foot array boundary must drop below 30V, and conductors inside the array boundary must drop below 80V.
- ⚡Do NOT pass both PV+ and PV- of the same string through the same ferrite transmitter core in the same direction (the magnetic fields cancel out!). Pass only the PV+ wire of each string through the SunSpec transmitter core.
🛠️ COMMISSIONING✅ Master Electrician Pre-Energization & Commissioning ChecklistVerify polarity, CT orientation, and firmware before throwing the main breaker.
- ✓Before turning on the inverter's RSD transmitter, measure each string with a multimeter: a 10-panel Tigo string should read ~6.0V DC (0.6V per Tigo unit).
- ✓Turn on the inverter RSD transmitter: string voltage should jump to full ~410V Voc within 10 seconds.
❓ ELECTRICIAN FAQDo Enphase microinverters need Tigo rapid shutdown boxes?
No! Because Enphase microinverters convert DC to 240V AC right under each solar panel and automatically shut off within cycles when AC power disconnects, Enphase systems are inherently NEC 690.12 Rapid Shutdown compliant with zero extra boxes.
