100A Critical Loads Backup Subpanel Wiring Diagram (Neutral Isolation & Circuit Migration)

When using a 5kW–7.6kW inverter (like a single Enphase 5P/10T, EcoFlow Delta Pro, or 6kW hybrid), backing up the entire 200A panel can overload the inverter. Here is how to wire a 100A Critical Loads Subpanel beside your main panel in 3 hours.

System Voltage Bus
120/240V Split-Phase 60A–100A Subpanel
Primary Conductor Spec
#3 AWG Cu (100A) or #6 AWG Cu (60A) + #12/#14 AWG Branch Circuit Extensions
OCPD Breaker / Fuse
60A–100A 2-Pole Feeder Breaker
Conduit & Raceway Spec
1-1/4'' EMT Short Nipple Between Main Panel and Critical Loads Subpanel

NEC 2023 Code Compliance & Electrician Commissioning Checklist

⚖️ NEC 2023 CODE📜 Mandatory NEC Code Compliance Notes (NEC 2023 Art. 250.24, 408 & 702)
Pass your municipal AHJ rough and final electrical inspection on the first visit.
  • ⚡CRITICAL NEUTRAL EXTENSION RULE (NEC 300.3(B)): When moving a 120V circuit (like the kitchen refrigerator) from the Main Panel into the Critical Loads Subpanel, you MUST extend BOTH the black Hot wire AND its paired white Neutral wire through the conduit nipple into the subpanel! If you leave the neutral landed in the main panel while moving the hot to the subpanel, the inverter's GFCI/relay will trip immediately and create an inductive heating hazard.
  • ⚡Multi-Wire Branch Circuits (MWBC / Shared Neutrals): If two 120V circuits share a single white neutral wire (red and black hots in a 3-wire cable), you MUST move BOTH hots onto a 2-pole handle-tied breaker on opposite phases (L1 & L2) in the subpanel.
🛠️ COMMISSIONING✅ Master Electrician Pre-Energization & Commissioning Checklist
Verify polarity, CT orientation, and firmware before throwing the main breaker.
  • ✓Verify Continuity = OPEN (Infinite Ohms) between the Subpanel Neutral Busbar and Subpanel Ground Busbar before landing feeders.
  • ✓Identify any Multi-Wire Branch Circuits (MWBC) before disconnecting neutrals.
❓ ELECTRICIAN FAQWhy did my inverter trip as soon as I moved one circuit to the subpanel?

Either you left that circuit's white neutral wire landed in the main panel instead of moving it to the subpanel neutral bar, or the circuit is part of a Multi-Wire Branch Circuit sharing a neutral with another breaker still in the main panel.
