Geodesic Dome & Yurt Off-Grid 48V Ground-Mount Solar Blueprint

Never attempt to bolt solar panels onto a curved yurt tension roof or PVC geodesic dome membrane! Learn how to build a 2.4kW–4.8kW ground-mount array 50–150 feet away in a sunny clearing and trench high-voltage PV wire with <1% voltage loss.

System Architecture
High-Voltage 250V–400V DC Trench from Ground Array to 48V Interior Power Hub
Solar Array Sizing
2.4 kW to 4.8 kW Adjustable-Tilt Ground-Mount Bifacial Array
LiFePO4 Storage
10.2 kWh to 14.3 kWh 48V LiFePO4

1. Structural & Electrical Engineering Specifications

  • 1Why Ground-Mounting Is Mandatory for Yurts and Domes: A yurt’s radial rafters rely on tension cables and breathable architectural fabric; penetrating the roof membrane voids your yurt warranty and leaks in heavy rain. Furthermore, yurts and domes are usually nestled under shade trees for summer comfort.
  • 2High-Voltage Series String Trenching (150 Feet on Cheap 10 AWG Wire!): If you tried to send 12V DC 150 feet from a clearing to your yurt, you’d need $1,500 of 4/0 copper cable. By wiring 8x 400W panels in series (8S1P = ~310V DC at only 10.5 Amps!) into a 500V MPPT hybrid inverter inside the yurt, you can run simple 10 AWG THWN-2 copper inside 3/4" Schedule 40 PVC conduit 150 feet underground with less than 0.9% voltage drop!
  • 3NEC 300.5 Underground Trench Depth Rules: Direct-buried UF/USE-2 cable or PVC conduit requires an 18-inch burial depth (or 12 inches if GFCI/low-power, or 6 inches under a 4-inch concrete pad) with red plastic underground warning tape buried 12 inches above the conduit.

2. Step-by-Step Racking & 48V Wiring Topology

STAGE 1

Sunny Clearing 50–150 ft Away → Ground-Mount Steel/Unistrut Frame (8x 400W Bifacial Panels in 8S1P ~310V DC String) + Local Exterior DC Isolator Switch & Ground Rod.

STAGE 2

18-Inch Underground Trench → 3/4" Schedule 40/80 Grey Electrical PVC Conduit → 10 AWG Copper THWN-2 PV+ / PV- + 10 AWG Bare/Green EGC.

STAGE 3

Yurt/Dome Utility Closet → EG4 6000XP (or EcoFlow Delta Pro Ultra) + 14.3 kWh 48V LiFePO4 Battery + Surface-Mount Wiremold / Exposed Industrial EMT Conduit along yurt perimeter wall.

Tiny Home & ADU Solar Engineering FAQ

Does a ground-mounted solar array require Rapid Shutdown (NEC 690.12) like a house roof?

No! Under NEC 690.12, Rapid Shutdown module-level electronics are ONLY required for PV arrays mounted "on or in buildings." A free-standing ground-mounted array whose conductors enter the building directly into a metallic enclosure/disconnect is exempt from module-level rapid shutdown—saving you $600+ in RSD transmitters!

How do I wire outlets inside a circular yurt without frame walls?

Run painted 1/2" EMT metal conduit or cedar-trimmed baseboard raceways around the circular lattice wall perimeter fed from a small 6-circuit subpanel mounted on the solid wood door frame.
