Solar VFD Pump Controllers: Running Existing 240V / 480V AC Submersible Well Pumps on Solar Panels
If you already have a working 230V or 460V 3-phase (or 3-wire single-phase) AC submersible pump hanging 400 feet down your well, you do NOT need to pay a well rig $3,500 to pull the pipe and buy a new DC pump! By installing an MPPT Solar Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)—such as a Lorentz PSk2/PSk3, Franklin Electric Fhoton/SubDrive Solar, or Yaskawa/ABB Solar Pump Drive—at the wellhead, you convert high-voltage DC solar strings directly into soft-start variable-frequency AC power.
Conventional Grid/Generator Pumping vs. Solar Hydraulic Engineering
| Hydraulic Parameter | Conventional AC / Generator Mistake | Solar Hydraulic Engineering Spec | Ranch & Homestead Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pulling Existing Well Pipe & Pump Replacement | Hire boom truck ($2,500+) to pull 400 ft of steel pipe and discard a working AC pump | Leave existing 3-phase (or 3-wire) AC pump in the hole; wire above-ground Solar MPPT VFD to existing wellhead leads | Zero down-hole labor; converts an existing well to solar in 4 hours at ground level |
| 3-Phase AC Pump Efficiency & Availability | Proprietary DC pumps can have long lead times above 3 HP | Uses standard off-the-shelf Franklin Electric / Grundfos / Goulds 230V/460V 3-phase submersible motors (1.5 HP to 100 HP) | Every rural well supply house in America stocks standard 3-phase 230V/460V submersible motors |
| Variable Frequency Soft-Start (25 Hz to 60 Hz) | Across-the-line 60 Hz contactor slam causes 600% current spike and pipe torque jump | Solar VFD starts motor gently at 20–25 Hz in early morning sun and ramps smoothly up to 60 Hz at solar noon | Eliminates mechanical water-hammer shock and extends submersible thrust-bearing life by 2x |
| Hybrid Solar + Grid / Diesel Generator Blending | Either 100% grid or 100% off-grid | Dual-input Solar VFDs blend daytime solar DC with 240V/480V AC grid or generator power seamlessly | Slashes daytime farm irrigation electric bills by 75% while allowing 24/7 operation during peak crop watering weeks |

3-Step Borehole & Ranch Commissioning Checklist
Verify Existing Down-Hole Motor Wiring (3-Wire vs. 2-Wire)
Confirm whether your existing submersible pump is a 3-phase motor (3 power leads + ground) or a 3-wire single-phase motor (where the above-ground capacitor control box can be removed and driven by a single-phase/phase-converting solar VFD). Note: 2-wire motors with internal starting switches require an off-grid inverter rather than a variable-frequency drive.
Size DC String Vmp to Match VFD Nominal Bus Voltage (1.414 × AC Volts)
To output full 230V AC 60 Hz power at solar noon, wire solar panels in series so the operating MPPT voltage (Vmp) is approximately 330V–370V DC (for 230V AC motors) or 650V–720V DC (for 460V AC motors).
Install Output dV/dt Reactor or Sine-Wave Filter on Deep Wells (>150 Ft)
Because high-frequency PWM pulses from a VFD can cause reflected-wave voltage spikes on long submersible drop cables, install a 3-phase load reactor or sine-wave filter between the VFD output and the wellhead whenever motor lead length exceeds 150 feet.

Frequently Asked Solar Well Pumping Questions
Why must a Solar VFD have a "Minimum Frequency Limit" (usually 28–30 Hz) programmed for submersible well pumps?
Submersible well pump motors use water-lubricated Kingsbury thrust bearings at the bottom of the motor that require a minimum rotational speed (around 1,700 RPM / 28–30 Hz) to maintain a hydrodynamic water wedge between the spinning plates. Furthermore, below 25–30 Hz, the pump doesn’t generate enough pressure to open the top check valve, so it would just churn water in place and overheat. Setting the VFD minimum sleep frequency to 30 Hz ensures the pump only spins when it can actively push water out the top.
Why is an output load reactor or sine-wave filter so important when putting a VFD on an older submersible well pump?
VFDs chop DC solar power into thousands of high-speed PWM pulses per second. When those sharp voltage pulses travel down 300 to 600 feet of underwater well cable, transmission-line reflection doubles the voltage peak to 1,000+ Volts, which can pinhole-puncture older motor winding insulation. A $250 output load reactor smooths those sharp edges into a gentle wave, protecting your down-hole pump for decades.
