Fifth-Wheel & Toy Hauler Off-Grid Solar Blueprint (3,000W Roof + Pass-Through Rack)

Turn a 42-foot Fifth-Wheel Toy Hauler into an unlimited BLM desert boondocking palace: mounting 3,000W+ of solar on a walkable TPO/PVC membrane roof and installing 48V server-rack LiFePO4 batteries in the front pass-through bay.

1. Mobile Electrical & Roof Mounting Engineering Specifications

  • 1Fifth-Wheel Roof Framing & Dicor Sealing: Fifth-wheel roofs use 3/8" OSB or plywood decking over 16" OC aluminum or wood trusses covered by Alpha Systems TPO or PVC membrane. Anchor solar mounting feet into roof trusses using #14 roofing screws with butyl tape underneath and Dicor 501LSW self-leveling lap sealant over every screw head.
  • 2Front Generator / Pass-Through Compartment Battery Layout: A 6-slot or 3-slot 48V steel server-rack enclosure bolted to the fifth-wheel steel pin-box frame stores 15.36 kWh to 30.72 kWh of LiFePO4 right over the kingpin—where the trailer structure is strongest.
  • 3Whole-Coach 50A Power Without Rewiring Subpanels: By installing a 48V split-phase inverter (delivering true L1 and L2 120V/240V 50A service) immediately downstream of the automatic generator transfer switch, every single outlet, microwave, fireplace, and all three rooftop A/Cs work seamlessly without rewiring branch circuits.

RV & Overland Solar Engineering FAQ

Should I disconnect the factory 12V WFCO/Progressive Dynamics converter when installing a 48V inverter-charger?

Yes! If you leave the factory 12V AC-to-DC converter breaker ON while running on your 48V inverter and feeding 12V via a 48V-to-12V DC-DC converter, you create an energy-wasting "charging loop." Turn off the factory AC converter breaker and let the 96%-efficient 48V-to-12V converter supply the 12V fuse panel.

Can a fifth-wheel roof hold the weight of 8 large solar panels?

Yes. Eight 400W solar panels weigh ~350 lbs distributed evenly across a 35-foot roof span (less than 10 lbs per linear foot). Just ensure mounting brackets are screwed into the roof rafters/trusses and sealed with butyl tape + Dicor.
