Marine Diesel Generator Elimination: The All-Electric Galley, Watermaker & Starlink Blueprint
Eliminate both the high-maintenance marine diesel generator AND explosive propane (LPG) lockers: how to power an induction cooktop, 40 GPH RO watermaker, Starlink, and espresso machine 100% off solar + lithium.
1. Marine Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Specifications
- 1Why Marine Diesel Generators Are Maintenance Nightmares: Small 4kW–8kW marine diesel gensets cost $14,000–$22,000 installed, weigh 450 lbs, vibrate the boat, smell like diesel exhaust at anchor, and suffer constant raw-water impeller and heat-exchanger failures. A 14.3 kWh 48V LiFePO4 bank + 5kW inverter + 2.4kW solar array costs half as much and runs silently.
- 2All-Electric Galley Daily kWh Budget: Cooking 3 meals a day on a 2-burner induction cooktop + convection air-fryer + morning espresso uses surprisingly little energy because induction transfers 88% of energy directly into the pan: just 1.8 to 2.4 kWh/day total!
- 3Watermaker + Starlink + Refrigeration Budget: Running a Schenker Zen or Rainman high-efficiency watermaker for 90 minutes (25–35 gallons of fresh water) uses ~1.2 kWh; DC marine fridge/freezer uses ~1.4 kWh/day; DC-converted Flat High-Performance Starlink uses ~0.9 kWh/day. Total whole-yacht daily load without AC = 5.5 to 6.5 kWh/day—easily produced by a 1.6kW–2.0kW solar array.
2. ABYC E-11 / E-13 Busbar & Wiring Schematic Topology
48V 14.3 kWh–28.6 kWh LiFePO4 Bank → 5,000W–7,200W Pure Sine Wave Inverter with built-in 30A/50A Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) and Neutral-Ground Relay (per ABYC E-11).
AC Subpanel Breaker #1 (20A GFCI): Two-Burner Marine Gimbaled Induction Range (1,800W–2,400W peak).
AC Subpanel Breaker #2 (15A GFCI): High-Efficiency RO Watermaker & Convection Microwave.
48V-to-48V PoE Injector: Direct DC power to Starlink router and dish (saving 25% AC inverter idle losses).

Marine Engineering FAQ
Does cooking with induction really use less than 2.5 kWh per day on a boat?
Yes! Even though an induction burner draws 1,500W on high, it boils 2 quarts of water in 4 minutes (0.10 kWh). Simmering dinner for 30 minutes at 400W uses just 0.20 kWh. Most liveaboard couples measure 1.6 to 2.3 kWh/day for all cooking and coffee.
Why must a marine inverter have an automatic Neutral-to-Ground bonding relay?
Under ABYC E-11, when unplugged from shore power, the boat’s AC source (the inverter) MUST bond AC Neutral to Boat Ground so GFCI/ELCI breakers can trip during a fault. When plugged into dock shore power, the inverter must unbond Neutral-Ground so it occurs only at the shore pedestal.
