NEC 705.12 120% Busbar Rule Explained: Opposite-End Breaker Placement & Sum Rule

Master the three NEC 705.12(B)(3) busbar sizing formulas—including why the solar breaker MUST be positioned at the opposite end of the busbar from the main breaker and why center-fed panels fail the 120% rule.

1. NEC Code Rules & Electrical Engineering Breakdown

RULE 1

The Physics Behind the 120% Rule (Opposite-End Loading): If a 200A main breaker is at the TOP of a 200A copper busbar and a 40A solar breaker is placed at the VERY BOTTOM of the busbar, the currents flow in opposite directions toward the branch breakers in the middle—so no section of the busbar exceeds 200A. If you put the solar breaker right next to the main breaker at the top, the middle of the busbar could see 200A + 40A = 240A and overheat!

RULE 2

Formula: (Busbar Rating × 1.20) - Main Breaker Rating = Max Inverter Output × 1.25. Because NEC 705.12 requires sizing the solar breaker at 125% of the inverter’s continuous AC output current, a 40A solar breaker supports up to 32A continuous (7,680W @ 240V).

RULE 3

Watch Out for "Center-Fed" Main Panels: In many older California and Southwest Meter-Main panels, the main breaker feeds the MIDDLE of the busbar rather than one end. Under NEC 705.12(B)(3)(2), the 120% opposite-end rule ONLY applies if the main breaker is at one end! On a center-fed panel without manufacturer engineering approval, you must use a Supply-Side Tap, PCS clamp, or main breaker derate.

2. Field Calculation Worksheet & Amperage Table

MAXIMUM SOLAR BREAKER TABLE UNDER NEC 705.12(B)(3)(2) (120% RULE)
------------------------------------------------------------------
1. 100A Busbar / 100A Main: (100 × 1.2) - 100 = 20A Breaker (3.84 kW AC Max)
2. 125A Busbar / 100A Main: (125 × 1.2) - 100 = 50A Breaker (9.60 kW AC Max)
3. 200A Busbar / 200A Main: (200 × 1.2) - 200 = 40A Breaker (7.68 kW AC Max)
4. 225A Busbar / 200A Main: (225 × 1.2) - 200 = 70A Breaker (13.44 kW AC Max!)

Inspector & NEC Compliance FAQ

Why should I buy a "Solar-Ready" 200A Main Panel with a 225A Busbar when building or upgrading?

A 200A panel with a 225A busbar costs only ~$40 more than a standard 200A/200A panel, yet increases allowable solar backfeed from 40A (7.68 kW) to 70A (13.44 kW) without any main breaker derate!

What is the NEC 705.12(B)(3)(3) 125% Sum of All Breakers Rule?

Even if you don’t put the solar breaker at the opposite end, NEC 705.12(B)(3)(3) allows solar + battery backfeed of ANY size as long as the sum of 125% of the inverter output PLUS all branch circuit breakers (excluding the main breaker) does not exceed 125% of the busbar rating—ideal for small solar-combiner subpanels!
