240V Submersible Well Pump & HVAC Locked Rotor Amps (LRA) Inverter Sizing Guide

A 1.5 HP 240V submersible deep-well pump sits 300 feet underground under a 130 lb column of water head—drawing up to 52 Amps (12,480W) at startup. Here is the exact NEC 430 motor surge table and how to size your hybrid inverter.

Service & Panel Scope
1/2 HP to 3 HP 240V Deep Well Pumps & 2-Ton to 5-Ton Compressors
Cost & Permit Impact
Prevents buying an undersized high-frequency inverter that trips whenever the well pump kicks on

1. NEC Code Rules & Electrical Engineering Breakdown

RULE 1

Why Submersible Well Pumps Are Harder to Start Than Air Conditioners: Unlike a surface centrifugal pump, a 2-wire or 3-wire Franklin Electric / Grundfos submersible well pump must overcome the static head weight of the entire vertical water column immediately upon energization—drawing 5x to 6x its running watts for 0.5 seconds.

RULE 2

3-Wire Control Box (Start Capacitor) vs. 2-Wire Pumps: A 3-wire submersible pump (Red, Black, Yellow + Ground) uses an above-ground Franklin control box where you can wire a soft-starter or replace aging start capacitors. A 2-wire pump seals the starting switch 300 feet down the well!

RULE 3

The Ultimate Fix — Constant-Pressure Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Well Pumps: Upgrading to a Grundfos SQ/SQE soft-start pump or adding a Pentek Intellidrive VFD eliminates 100% of well pump startup surge (ramping from 0W to 1,400W over 3 seconds).

2. Field Calculation Worksheet & Amperage Table

240V SUBMERSIBLE WELL PUMP RUNNING VS. STARTUP SURGE TABLE

• 3/4 HP 240V Well Pump: 1,350W Running | 5,200W LRA Surge (21.6A Peak)
• 1.0 HP 240V Well Pump: 1,650W Running | 7,200W LRA Surge (30.0A Peak)
• 1.5 HP 240V Well Pump: 2,100W Running | 9,800W LRA Surge (40.8A Peak)

Inspector & NEC Compliance FAQ

Can a single 120V inverter with a step-up transformer run a 240V well pump?

Never use a cheap 120V inverter on a 240V well pump; always use a native 120V/240V split-phase inverter (like the EG4 6000XP, EG4 18kPV, or EcoFlow Delta Pro Ultra) with at least 2x the pump’s LRA wattage rating.

Why do lights flicker for half a second when my well pump kicks on during battery backup?

That brief dip is caused by the inductive motor’s 40A inrush current before the inverter’s PWM control loop compensates within 1–2 AC cycles (16–32 milliseconds). Installing a soft-starter or VFD eliminates the flicker completely.
