System Overview
This 8.2 kW system was installed on a standing seam metal roof in South Austin (ZIP 78704). The installation spans two roof planes: 14 panels facing South (182° azimuth) and 6 panels facing West (272° azimuth) to capture late-afternoon solar production.
Austin Energy operates a unique Value of Solar (VoS) tariff structure. Rather than offsetting instantaneous usage or using a netting meter, all solar electricity produced is measured by a dedicated gross generation meter and credited on the monthly bill at the approved Value of Solar rate ($0.0991/kWh in 2024–2026). Simultaneously, all household consumption is billed at standard tiered retail rates.
Year-1 Production & Performance
- Gross Production: 12,450 kWh across the first 12 billing cycles.
- Value of Solar Tariff Credit: 12,450 kWh × $0.0991 = $1,233.80 total bill credits earned.
- Austin Energy Customer Rebate: Qualified for Austin Energy's $2,500 residential solar education rebate upon completion of the mandatory solar customer course.
- Net Out-of-Pocket Initial Investment: $18,820 (accounting for local municipal utility rebate).
Owner Observations
- Gross Metering Transparency: Austin Energy's separate solar generation meter makes accounting straightforward. The bill clearly displays total kWh produced multiplied by the VoS rate, with no ambiguity regarding instantaneous self-consumption percentages.
- West-Facing Panel Value: While the South-facing array generated roughly 8% more raw annual kilowatt-hours per panel, the West-facing panels proved reliable during Austin's hot late-summer afternoons when household air conditioning demand peaked.
- No Storage Constraint: Because all generation is credited through the VoS mechanism regardless of when electricity is consumed inside the home, an expensive battery storage system was not necessary to maximize financial return.
